Nottingham has launched its new business development office in Ningbo, based at the University of Nottingham's campus in the Chinese port city.
The occasion was marked with a reception at Nottingham's Council House.
The council has set up a limited company, Nottingham Business Development, with a bilingual website that can be used by both UK and Chinese companies.
At the launch City council chief executive Michael Frater said the office was built on the council's strong relationship with the university and recognised an important and exciting period in China's economic development. It presented an opportunity for Nottingham's businesses, universities, schools, colleges and the city's research and development.
China's economic growth has been fuelled by demand from the rest of the world for products from its widespread and expanding industrial base. China is fast developing its knowledge-based economy, particularly in science and technology, attracting a highly skilled and educated workforce and rapidly increasing its research and development capabilities. Mr Frater said the creation of the Ningbo campus had led to Nottingham's relationships with China going from strength to strength.
The city has signed a Sister City agreement with Ningbo in which both have agreed to collaborate on economic development, educational and cultural projects.
Mr Frater said Nottingham had developed business relationships at the Zhejiang Trade Fair in China.
The city has been involved in supporting numerous trade visits and the new office is seen as an ideal way to develop links with the whole of the Zhejiang Province, the city of Shanghai, and across the eastern part of the Yangtze River Delta.
"Any business support organisation in China will tell you that you can't view the country as one market, but we see our new office as a gateway for Nottingham's businesses to the highly entrepreneurial and fast growing Greater Shanghai area," said Mr Frater.
Beryl Chen has been appointed business development manager for Nottingham Business Development.
She worked for the British Consulate in Shanghai and has excellent knowledge and experience of supporting trade and investment from the UK to China.
