Ningbo is a major port city for foreign trade and has become an important industrial city and economic centre on China's East coast, south of Shanghai. It ranks 12th amongst China’s main trading cities and is one of China's fastest growing economies in terms of GDP. Ningbo is a modern city. The conurbation covers an area of 9,365 km² and has a population of some 5.49 million. Ningbo is developing at a great pace with plans, not only to extend and modernize the existing city centre, but also to build a second city centre anew. Ningbo is also a famous historic city, rich in cultural heritage dating back more than 7,000 years.

Ningbo is an important industrial base and major port city for the Zhejiang Province. Traditional industries include textiles and machinery.12% of China’s clothing output is produced in Ningbo. Large-scale harbor-based industries include petrochemicals, iron & steel, power generation and papermaking. Recent research by China Business Solutions on behalf of UKTI and emda also shows that the city is looking to develop the hi-tech industries sector and seeks to attract greater foreign investment through incentives.
